This renovation for a friend’s friend presented an opportunity to renew a long-lived-in apartment for a mother and her two teenage daughters. This apartment, located in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, provided centrality and the convenience of urban living. While the community has densified over the years, it still enjoys a human-scaled grain and friendly character, a place this family still wanted to make their home.

Their existing space is characterized by a dark, dated palette (from the original base building), accumulated furnishings, and mixed tastes over the years. With a modest budget and a desire to create a new quality of space, our approach was to replace, reduce, and layer in a contemporary aesthetic through the restrained use of materials: lightened honey-toned wood for the cabinetry and floors and a gallery of whites for the fixtures, furnishings, and walls. Parred-down detailing and thoughtfully chosen furniture further unify this minimalistic thread. Cherished objects and art can find their place within this remodeled space.

The resulting space welcomes a change to order and calm while remaining familiar, pragmatic, and functional. This transformation offers a new everyday home space, an embracing, quiet sanctuary for this family as they move into the next stages of their lives.
